Urim and Thummim: The Mystery of Divine Divination Tools in the Bible
Two sacred stones in the High Priest's breastplate. The only legitimate divination tools to know God's will
The Only Divination Tool Approved by God
The Bible generally prohibits divination, but remarkably, there was a "legitimate divination tool" commanded by God Himself: the Urim and Thummim.
Exodus 28:30 states:
> "Put the Urim and Thummim in the breastpiece of judgment, so they will be over Aaron's heart when he enters the presence of the Lord."
Meaning of Urim and Thummim
Urim - from "Or" (light), meaning "lights"
Thummim - from "Tam" (perfect), meaning "perfections"
Together they represent "Light and Perfection" or "Revelation and Truth."
The High Priest's Breastplate
The Urim and Thummim were placed in the Hoshen (breastplate), which contained 12 gemstones representing the 12 Tribes of Israel.
12 Gems and 12 Tribes
- Reuben: Ruby (Aquarius)
- Simeon: Topaz (Pisces)
- Judah: Garnet (Leo)
- Dan: Sapphire (Scorpio)
- And so on...
Methods of Use (Theories)
1. Glowing Gems: Talmudic tradition suggests stones mysteriously illuminated letters
2. Casting Lots: Simple yes/no determination
3. Meditative Oracle: High priest received divine voice through deep meditation
Biblical Examples
- Saul: God refused to answer through Urim after Saul's disobedience (1 Samuel 28:6)
- David: Successfully received guidance repeatedly (1 Samuel 23:9-12)
The Lost Oracle
After the First Temple's destruction (586 BCE), the Urim and Thummim vanished from history. Ezra 2:63 hints at their return in the Messianic age.
